What is Encaustic?

Encaustic is a beeswax and resin based “paint” that is kept in a molten state on a heated palette. It is applied to a surface and reheated to fuse the paint into a uniform finish. The word encaustic comes from the Greek word enkastikos meaning to “burn into”, referring to the process of fusing the paint.  Encaustic has an ancient history, but it is as versatile as any 21st century medium.

Encaustic paintings are durable and archival. As with all fine art forms, they should not be exposed to direct sunlight or extreme temperatures – they will thrive in temperatures between 35 and 125 degrees F. Indirect sunlight or bright, white lighting is desirable and will bring out the luminescent quality imparted by the wax medium. Dusting the painting surface with a soft damp cloth and buffing it with a soft cloth periodically will maintain the unique patina of the wax.

Encaustic paintings have enjoyed recent popularity and collectability thanks in large part to Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns revival of the medium.
